The principals of Shockoe Company have played an instrumental role in the rehabilitation of Richmond’s Shockoe Slip as well as other historic districts in the area. Many buildings suffered the ravages of the evacuation fire in 1865 and were rebuilt in the late 1800s and early 1900s but over the decades suffered both economical and physical decline. The Shockoe Slip area remained in a general state of obsolescence and disrepair until the 1970s when the first buildings underwent renovations.
Today, Shockoe Slip and Shockoe Bottom serve as a focal point for all of Richmond. In ever-growing numbers, residents, shoppers, tourists and diners make up a vibrant community that only a few years ago was considered economically distressed. Mark Merhige has been a driving force in the revitalization of the Shockoe Slip/Shockoe Bottom districts. For more than two decades, Mr. Merhige has been deeply involved in the redevelopment of the downtown area. He has owned or managed hundreds of residential units and commercial ventures, including office, retail, dining and parking facilities.
Shockoe Company, under the direction of Bill Elliott and Merhige, grew into a full-service property management provider, servicing a portfolio of 1,000 + residential units and over 1,400,000 square feet of commercial space across the state of Virginia and North Carolina, valued in excess of $150,000,000. We are one of the few real estate firms that offers multi-family and commercial property management, commercial sales and leasing, association management, and project management services.
We are also active participants in the key organizations and initiatives that impact downtown and the area at large. Through our involvement, we ensure that the interests of our client communities are protected and promoted. We’ve provided clients with superior management, leasing, sales and consulting services for decades, and we look forward to offering them even more in the future.
